The Dalmore 1969 Constellation Collection Single Malt Scotch Whisky (Batch 14)

January 11, 2016

the dalmoreThe Dalmore Constellation Collection: Just before Christmas we (I) attended a tasting session with none other than Master Distiller, Richard Patterson from Whyte & Mackay. Now, I did mention that on the night I had the pleasure of sampling some of their best expressions. Among them was the limited edition 21-year-old scotch, the new limited edition 30-year-old expression and this absolute stunner from the constellation collection. The Dalmore Constellation Collection brings together the complete spectrum of vintages created in Dalmore’s iconic Highland distillery between the years 1964 and 1992. The 21 single cask whiskies that make up this collection are truly remarkable and sought after by collectors alike. According to The Dalmore, while each expression has their own inimitable style, together they are a captivating constellation of unsurpassed pleasure.

On the nose: is a rich waft of madeira cake, oranges, chocolate and strangely enough but yet still complementing, balsamic vinegar. This is then followed by marzipan and spicy notes of, star anise and nutmeg. There is a lovely hint of lemon zest that starts to emerge followed by oats, parma violets, oak and light herbs. On the palate: you’ll experience those rich oranges, coupled with dark cherries, dark chocolate and that complementing balsamic vinegar. It has a comforting oily note, along side notes of honey, cinnamon and a hint of zest. There is a welcomed meaty note in there, as well as pineapple, mulled wine, praline, treacle and oak. The finish: is long, dry, with lingering herbs and oak.

The verdict: First off, I’m going to say this isn’t a scotch that is made for everyone but more for the gentleman who most likely has access to unlimited funds and you’ll see why when you glance down at the price. Now that is out-of-the-way, what do I actually think of it? It is a downright awesome drop of liquid gold that in all honesty I wasn’t expecting. Its depth is something very special that can only be savoured. With a ABV of 45.5%, I personally didn’t need to add any water but if you feel the need, then add just enough until it’s right for you.

The Dalmore 1969 Year Old Single Malt Scotch from the Constellation Collection can be found in-store or online at The Whisky Shop for £23,454.00.
