The Dalmore 30 Year Old Single Malt Scotch: A couple of weeks ago I wrote about a tasting session I attended with none other than Master Distiller, Richard Patterson from Whyte & Mackay. I did mention that on the night I had the pleasure of sampling some of their best expressions. Among them was the limited edition 21-year-old scotch and this other limited expression: The Dalmore 30. With the use of a mixture of ex-sherry and ex-bourbon casks, Dalmore’s new make is perfect for sherry wood maturation. This leads to a rich and sherried nose, with sweet malt, fruit cake and oranges. As mentioned, The Dalmore 30 is a one-off limited release of only 888 bottles worldwide, with only 110 remaining in the UK. Matured Matusalem oloroso and Amoroso oloroso sherry butts, hand-sourced from the famous Gonzalez Byass bodega, this expression will be much sought after.
On the nose: is a beautiful, intense note of clementines, chocolate, marzipan and plums. There is an oily note, which is closely followed by notes of cherries, apples, cloves, raisins, and a welcomed salty caramel note. Notes of madeira cake start to emerge followed by light wafts of lavender, more dark rich fruit notes and a hint of tarragon. On the palate: you’ll experience notes of mangoes, vanilla and coffee, followed by a dark chocolate ganache. Notes of black pepper start to filter through, coupled with star anise, coconut and a lovely meaty note. The palate is nicely rounded off with a herbaceous note and sweet dates. The finish: is long, spicy, with a lingering honey note and oak.
The verdict: Remember how i said the 21-year-old expression I tasted was brilliant, well this 30yo is in my opinion better. Again, rich in flavour, with plenty of depth, with a lovely combination of flavours that just seem to tickle your senses. With a ABV of 45%, I personally didn’t need to add any water but if you feel the need, then add just enough until it’s right for you.
