Talisker Distillers Edition Amoroso Cask Single Malt Scotch: Hailing from the only Scotch Whisky distillery on the Isle of Skye, this Talisker Distillers Edition is unique: after its usual ageing process in American oak casks, the whisky undergoes a second maturation in casks previously holding sherry. The result is older, sweeter and richer than the regular bottlings but the signature notes are still there. On the nose: you’ll get a lovely warm aroma of mixed fruits, some spices (cinnamon) and vanilla. This is then followed up by notes of liquorice, honey, a slight medicinal note and some beautiful oakiness. On the palate: that initial sweet aroma of mixed fruits is rather subdued, followed by those spices. The oak is more apparent on the palate but right at the end there you’ll get that honey kicking in, coupled with a wonderful milky texture and sweet coffee (which reminds me of how I like my espresso). The finish: is very smooth, spicy, with lingering smokiness.
The verdict: An Isle of Skye Scotch whisky that has all of the signature Talisker notes; full-bodied and smoky. Well-balanced but it may prove a little bitter for some. Being cask strength you’d be forgiven for thinking you may need to add a drop of water or two but in my opinion it doesn’t require any, all it needs is just time to breathe. However, if need be, by all means add water to suit your palate.
