Founded in 1794, Oban is among the earliest surviving malt whisky distilleries but while ownership may have changed hands over their many years of operation, the Western Highland distillery style of Malt is still epitomised by Oban’s gentle sweetness and richness of palate and finish. The Distillers Edition expression from Oban is a yearly, limited release and is made up of a small number of casks hand selected by seven distilleries for double maturing. This method of ageing the whisky has always been a tradition and lends much depth and complexity to each new expression.
On the nose: is a lovely and enticing warm waft of mixed fruits, raisins, berries and marzipan. This is closely followed by notes of honey, mint, vanilla and oak. After a few swirls more notes start to emerge in the form of oranges, cardamoms, aniseed, and a welcomed note of smoke. The nose is nicely rounded off with a light waft of sea salt, a hint of rosemary and lemon zest. On the palate: you’ll experience notes of oranges, cherries, vanilla and spices. This is followed by strawberries, fudge, butterscotch and lemon bonbons. There is an interesting herbaceous note floating around in there, alongside walnuts, cloves, liquorice, salted-caramel and a hint of dark chocolate. The finish: is long, sweet, spicy, with lingering oak and smoke.
The verdict: Admittedly this isn’t the first time I’ve tried Oban, however it is the first time I’ve tasted their Distillers Edition expression. This Limited Edition Distillers Edition has been double matured in Montilla Fino casks, which has imparted tonnes of character. It has such a lovely and delicate balance, with each little nuance of flavour tugging on your tasted buds. With a ABV of 43%, I didn’t need to add any water but if you feel the need, then add just enough until it’s right for you.
Oban Distillers Edition Single Malt Scotch Whisky can be found in any well-stocked whisky shop or online for approximately £80.
