Macallan recently released their fourth instalment of the annual Edition series: The Macallan Edition No.5. Like the Edition No.1, No.2, No.3 & No.4 that we’ve posted tasting notes on in previous years, this No.5 is a result of meticulously selected casks by Whisky Maker, Sarah Burgees. This limited edition whisky has not just been shaped by the use of exceptional casks but also takes its inspiration from Macallan’s devotion to a sprit that is pure and natural in colour. As Macallan have stated:
“The Macallan Edition No. 5 is our very own homage to the diversity and complexity of natural colour. Inspired by a coming together of whisky making mastery and colour expertise and insight, this single malt celebrates both The Macallan’s commitment to natural colour and the intricate whisky making process. 100% natural in colour, all of our exceptional whiskies from The Macallan are shaped from time spent in the very best casks; maturing, nurturing and developing character. World renowned colour masters at the Pantone Color Institute™ created a uniquely bold shade of purple; reflecting an enigmatic, multi-faceted and intricate combination of red and blue.”
To get the desired outcome, Macallan have used no less than 5 different casks: American Oak First Fill Barrel, American Oak Second fill Hogsheads/Butts, American Oak First Fill Tevasa Hogheads/Butts, American Oak First Fill Vasyma Butts and American Oak First Fill Hudosa Hogsheads/Butts.
On the nose: you’ll experience an initial waft of figs, currants, brown sugar and lemon zest. These initial notes are closely followed by notes of cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and a hint of vanilla. Notes of a green herbaceous nature start to emerge, followed by butterscotch, pears, apples, tobacco and poaches peaches. Completing the nose are notes of toffee, white pepper, honey, damsons and candy sticks. On the palate: there is more of a tropical tone, followed by all-spice, cinnamon, ginger and white pepper. Notes of butterscotch and salty caramel start to appear, alongside notes of green herbs, bitter dark chocolate, nutmeg and poached pears. Rounding-off the palate are notes of liqourice, toasted oats, cardamom, coconut cream and a meaty note. The finish: is long, sweet, with lingering honey, vanilla, spices and a perfume note.
The verdict: As mentioned, Whisky Marker Sarah Burgees selected 5 casks to produce Edition No.5; the result? An extraordinary dram of Scotch whisky, which offers multitude of delicious notes from nose to palate. This Macallan Edition No.5 is in contrast to what came before. The spirit was aged in exclusively American oak and as such, produces lighter, fruiter notes, with plenty of spices and tropical fruits on offer. With an ABV of 48.5%, this is probably not a Scotch that I would add any water to but if you feel the need then only add in small quantities until it is just right for you. As you may well be aware, these Editions are an annual releases and all I can say at this moment in time is, roll on No.6!
The Macallan Edition No.5 Single Malt Scotch Whisky from the Edition series is available online or in well-stocked Whisky Shops, for approximately £95. For more information on the Edition No.5, visit the official Macallan website.
