Glenkinchie Distillers Edition 15 Year Old Single Malt Scotch: We’ve looked at this Lowland scotch whisky before here but this is the special Distiller’s Edition. Distilled in 1996 and bottled in 2011 – this whisky has been aged in hand selected casks, double-matured in elegant amontillado cask wood chosen to compliment the whisky’s sophisticated balance between sweet and dry. On the nose: you’ll get a lovely waft of the red wine cask, giving it a very strong mixed fruit aroma but not a sweet one. This is then closely followed by an old, musty smell (almost like really old wood that is laden with cob webs), aniseed, vanilla but no spices. Some nice floral notes start to appear followed by marzipan. On the palate: it is actually quite sweet and has a nutty walnut taste to it. This is then followed by caramel, marzipan and a touch of vanilla but again no spices are evident. The finish: is very smooth, with very little alcohol burn. There is a little tingle and that old woody note lingers
The verdict: I was quietly impressed with this Distiller’s Edition Glenkinchie, it is definitely the kind of whisky that will have you unexpectedly going back for more and more. It was a little too easy to drink due to the gentle notes and flavours. As with all single malt scotches – this is best enjoyed straight, or with a very small amount of mineral water to allow the flavours to breathe.
