Glenfiddich 30 Year Old Single Malt Scotch : This Glenfiddich single malt scotch has been aged for 30 years in Spanish Oloroso and American Bourbon oak, which does add considerable depth and flavour. Some whiskies aged for this period of time can be overcooked by the oak but this Glenfiddich has been perfectly balanced. On the nose: you’ll get a strong waft of mixed tropical fruits; banana, fresh pineapples and mangos. Mixed in with that are some beautiful spices, most notably ginger. There are also hints of floral notes and sherry, with subtle suggestions of oak. On the palate: the oakiness is more apparent with hints of dark chocolate and sherry emerging. Those notes of mixed tropical fruits will start to come through, with hints of cinnamon and liquorice. The finish: is very, very smooth and warming – with lingering oak and a gentle hint of honey.
The verdict: As mentioned before, most whisky aged for this period of time tend to be overcooked by the oak. However, this beautiful Speyside scotch is packed with notes that are perfectly balanced – which make it an absolute pleasure. As with all single malt scotches – this is best enjoyed straight, or with a very small amount of mineral water to allow the flavours to breathe.
