Glenfiddich, the World’s Most Awarded Single Malt Whisky and just last month we highlighted a brilliant dram in the form of the Project XX. Yet, we often forget about some of the more stable expressions within their range that offer, perhaps, everything you need. The 18-year-old expression has been aged in Spanish Oloroso wood and American oak to mature this rich, intriguingly fruity and robust oak expression, but there are many more reasons why this expression is special. Every batch is individually numbered and carefully watched over. Each has an extraordinary consistency and character from an intense marrying period, and a warming, distinguished finish. A truly exceptional single malt, the result not just of eighteen years of care and attention, but of whisky-making craft and knowledge passed down through the generations.
On the nose: you’ll get an enticing creamy vanilla note, closely followed by butterscotch, marzipan and coconut. These initial notes are followed by tropical banana notes, cinnamon, peppery notes and a hint of sea salt. More notes emerge in the form of lavender, turmeric, honey and candy. The nose is rounded-off by red apples, thyme and a waft of dark chocolate. On the palate: those notes of honey, red apples, candy and that creamy vanilla are ever-present. Followed up by cinnamon, bananas, coconut, marzipan and dark chocolate. The palate is nicely completed with notes of tobacco, orange zest and thyme. The finish: long, sweet, peppery, within lingering hints of smoke.
The verdict: First off, let me just say that what you see in the image above is of course a much older bottling. That said, I’m actually a fan of these older style bottles. I’ve tasted this 18-year-old expression on many occasion but I flippantly forget just how good it actually is. Easy to drink and easy to enjoy, it is a drop that is smooth from the nose to the palate and teeters on the fine edge of well-balanced. With an ABV of 40%, in my opinion, it doesn’t really require any water but do add some if needed, or just enjoy it as you please.
