We’ve highlighted the GlenDronach distillery before, that was originally led by one James Allardice. GlenDronach are well-known for producing some of the most beautiful sweet, sherried style Scotch Whisky on the market today, largely owed in part to Billy Walker. While GlenDronach has made a name for itself, it has long been the key to Teacher’s blends. As mentioned before, GlenDronach are very well know for producing Scotch matured in ex-sherry Oloroso & Pedro Ximenez casks, which give rich, sweet and creamy notes. However, this particular dram is not from their core range but something from their wood finishes range. This 19 year-old Madeira Cask Finish was initially matured in European oak casks and afterwards finished its maturation in a very small batch of Madeira hogsheads, giving the final whisky its own range of unique flavours and aromas.
On the nose: you’ll be welcomed by sweet notes of crisp red apples, pears, apricots, honey and mixed fruits. These are nicely followed by notes of gooseberries, vanilla and a hint of lemon cheesecake. Spicy notes of cracked black pepper and cinnamon start to emerge, alongside nutty oak and the slightest hint of heather. On the palate: those initial sweet notes of red apples, pears and cinnamon morph into a lovely tart tatin. Followed by apricot syrup, vanilla, stem ginger and toffee. Notes of toasted oats start to unfold, as well as marzipan, lemon and a welcomed earthy note. The finish: is medium/long, with sweet ripe summer fruits, almonds and lingering nutty oak.
The verdict: This limited release, GlenDronach 19-year-old, Madeira Cask Finish is, in my opinion, everything you could want from a rich, summery GlenDronach. While the core range offers more whiskies that are heavily sherried, this Madeira cask finish has got a perfect balance of lighter, warm, summery notes combined with Glendronach’s signature sherry undertones. With an ABV of 46%, it doesn’t require any water in my opinion. Though if you feel the need to, then do so until it’s just right for you.
Glendronach 19 Year Old Madeira Cask Finish Single Malt Scotch Whisky can be found for approximately £130 online or in some specialist whisky shops. Though your best bet will perhaps be an online whisky auction.
