Dalmore are no strangers to creating heavily sherried whisky, packed full of flavour but for some unknown reason, we’ve never really posted tasting notes on their 15-year-old expression. Founded in 1839, The Dalmore (which translates to ‘the Big Meadow’) is notorious for being robust but yet musky and full of some of the most beautiful notes. With the use of of a mixture of ex-sherry and ex-bourbon casks, Dalmore’s new make is perfect for sherry wood maturation. This leads to a rich and sherried nose, with sweet malt, fruit cake and oranges – of course makes for a very enjoyable dram. This 15yo expression from the Highland distillery is the epitome of Dalmore’s style. This single malt is finished in different styles of sherry casks including Apostoles, Amoroso and Matusalem oloroso.
On the nose: there is inviting waft of marmalade, raisins and honey, closely followed by notes of treacle and marzipan. Notes of star anise start to emerge, alongside notes of aniseed, cinnamon and dark chocolate. There’s a lovely note of old leather and bark that appear, as well as a light musky note. Completing the nose is a hint of green herbs, oak, a creamy note and lemon zest. On the palate: those marmalade notes are ever-present, alongside, coffee, dates, raisins and aniseed. These are followed by notes of dark chocolate, gingerbread and brown sugar. Some spicy notes make an appearance in the form of cinnamon and star anise. Rounding-off the palate are notes of bergamot, walnuts and figs. The finish: is medium/long, creamy and bittersweet, with lingering smoky oak, honey and a nuttiness.
The verdict: It’s kind of weird that we’ve never posted tasting notes on this tasty dram before, considering it’s one of our Dalmore favourites. It ticks all the right boxes; it has plenty of depth in flavour, it’s nicely balanced and it’s one of those drops of liquid gold you’d happily share. This 15-year-old expression, has an ABV of 40%, which is quite low but this low volume wasn’t noticeable. This is perhaps a dram that doesn’t require any water but if you feel the need to add water, then only add a few drops.
This 15-year-old expression from Dalmore is available to buy online or in-store at any well-stocked whisky shop for approx. of £75.
