The Aberfeldy distillery was built a quarter of a mile east of Aberfeldy village by the Dewar brothers. Tommy and John Jnr, to supply fillings for the increasingly successful blends. We’ve had our fair share of Aberfeldy in the past but this new expression, which was introduced late-2019, is quite special. This 15yo expression has been aged in the finest quality French red wine casks from Pomerol, that were selected to finish the new limited-edition expression, ensuring that the wood complements and elevates Aberfeldy’s distillery character, not mask it. Initially spending 15 years in a combination of Bourbon re-fill and re-char casks, the whisky has undergone a second maturation period of around 4-5 months, adding an extra dimension of flavour.
Pomerol is the smallest of all the major Bordeaux wine producing appellations and home to some of the most expensive, sought after wines in the world. The best vineyards are planted on a seam of blue clay which extends across the raised plateau of Pomerol itself and it’s the only wine producing region in the world with a large concentration of this clay in its soils. The wine is known for being refined yet intense, with sensual notes of violet, red berries, truffles, and game.
On the nose: you’ll get a lovely waft of creme brulee, toffee, vanilla and shortbread biscuits. These initial notes are closely followed by brown sugar, cinnamon, toasted oats and a hint of lemon zest. Completing the nose are notes of over ripe apples, bananas, a hint of green herbs, honey and mandarins. On the palate: those sweet creamy vanilla notes are ever-present, followed by toffee, butterscotch, toasted oats and a refreshing note of coffee. Notes of gingerbread and brown sugar start to emerge, alongside cinnamon and cardamom. Rounding-off the palate is a meaty note, lemon zest and a green herbaceous note. The finish: is medium, spicy and sweet, with a lingering creamy note, and zest.
The verdict: The 15yo Aberfeldy is a lovely dram, so when I first heard of this 15yo expression that had been finished in Pomerol casks, I wasn’t too sure about what to expect? This 15-year-old Aberfeldy is a beautiful dram from nose to palate and offers up some lovely, light enticing notes, that are very well balanced. Bottled at 40%, this 15yo expression really doesn’t require any water, however, feel free to add some if required for your taste. Leaving it to breathe for 5 – 10 minutes also yields more notes.
Aberfeldy 15 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky is a limited edition and will cost you approximately £55. For more information on this 15-year-old expression, visit the official Aberfeldy website.
