The Omega Speedmaster ’57 Calibre 9906

March 9, 2022

We’ve already introduced a new Speedmaster this year but of course that was just a little taster from Omega of things to come for 2022. The Speedmaster ’57 has been around since 2013 and we even shared our thoughts on it here, however, Omega have decided to give it a little refreshment in the movement department as well as a slimmer case profile and an introduction of some additional colour schemes to the Speedmaster ’57 collection.

The dial layout of the ’57 is completely different to that of a ‘Professional’ Speedmaster or for even that matter a pre-moon/pre-professional Speedy too. However, it is more in-keeping with all the Speedmasters that house a Co-Axial movement but even then, there are subtle changes too. The main model sports a matte black sandwich dial, with recessed hour markers filled with vintage Super-LumiNova. Like the previous ’57, Omega have made use of Broad Arrow hand layout like those seen on the ’57 released in 2015. The sub dial at 3 o’clock records the accumulated hour and minutes, displayed via ‘Alpha’ hands which works very well providing a clean and clear reading. At 9 o’clock you have the running seconds and down at 6 o’clock is the neatly tucked away date window.

This 2022 Speedmaster ’57 Calibre 9906 features slightly smaller case than the previous model for a good reason we’ll get to in a minute. It measures 40.5mm in diameter and features a brushed steel Tachymetre bezel, which is in keeping with its vintage CK2915 ancestor – though enthusiasts, will notice the little detail that Omega have now included on this model is the dot over the 90.  The symmetrical case (for me) is just on the right side of perfect at 40.5mm, with a height of 12.99mm though it will likely feel a little taller due to the sapphire sandwich.

The Speedmaster ’57 features polished lugs with brushed sides that are also in keeping with its 1957 historical predecessor. Covering the dial is domed, scratch-resistant sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment inside. The flat-link style bracelet sports the same classic styling as the case with brushed outer links and polished centre links. The bracelet sports a double-folding locking clasp mechanism that is very secure and is operated by two buttons on the centre of the clasp. As the case features straight lugs, you’ll be able to admire the full length of the pump-style pushers at 2 and 4 o’clock.

As mentioned above this new Speedmaster ’57 is powered by the Omega Co-Axial calibre 9906, which also carries a METAS certification making it a Master Chronometer, but what makes this new movement truly special is the fact that it is a manually wound. The calibre 9906 utilises a column-wheel chronograph mechanism with 12-hour and 60-minute counter hands placed on the same sub-dial at 3 o’clock. The manually wound calibre 9906 utilises a free sprung balance with silicon balance spring (non-magnetic so it is not influenced by magnetism), with two barrels mounted in series providing a power reserve of up to 60 hours. The Rhodium plated bridge has been decorated with exclusive Geneva waves in arabesque.

The new Omega Speedmaster ’57 Calibre 9906 is available in eight new stainless-steel variations, with dials in black, green, blue, and red with an option of a bracelet or leather strap. Each variation is similarly priced, with the leather strap version priced at £7,450 and the bracelet version priced at £7,740. For more information on the new Speedmaster ’57 visit omegawatches.com.
