Glenfiddich Gran Reserva Single Malt Scotch : This Glenfiddich single malt scotch is matured for 21 years and then delicately finished in casks which previously held premium Caribbean rum. Four months in Gran Reserva barrels, delivers richer fruit flavours and aromas. On the nose: you’ll get a strong waft of mixed fruits, followed by banana and vanilla. You’ll also discover a bit of toffee starts to creep in and a small amount of marzipan – then that beautiful smell of oak! On the palate: you’ll get an intense sweet flavour with a milky texture, followed by those mentioned mixed fruits. Some of those spices will start to emerge but will then dry up and give you a short burst of oak. The finish: is very, very smooth and warming but quite dry and woody.
The verdict: This a good Caribbean rum cask finished scotch whisky but unfortunately for me nowhere near as good as the Balvenie Caribbean rum cask. This is a bit of a shame as I had high hopes for this one, it was slightly underwhelming but is still full of beautiful notes. As with all single malt scotches – this is best enjoyed straight, or with a very small amount of mineral water to allow the flavours to breathe.
