Winter Whisky Selection: Some love it and some don’t but one thing we all like to do during the winter is cozy up to the fire. What better way to do it than with a lovely dram of whisky! So, this week we’ve put together some tasty whiskies to fill your cupboard with this winter and also thrown in some unsuspected drams that’ll definitely have you going back for more.
From left to right
Strathisla 12yo: complex yet approachable Whisky from the spiritual home of Chivas. Tasting notes: Fresh green apples on the nose with a fruity honied palate and a charming smooth finish. £40.49
Balvenie 12 Year Old First Fill Single Barrel. Only released earlier this year but soon jumped into one of my top Whiskies. Tasting notes: Matured on First Fill Bourbon Barrels it is perfumed vanilla and banana sweets with cream soda, which leads onto the palate with a light caramel introduction. The perfect dram for the dessert lover of the household. £51.49
#Where There’s Smoke
Lagavulin Distillers Edition, classic Lagavulin but matured on Pedro Ximenez cask for its final year. Tasting notes: A more restrained peat aroma with that distinctly rich PX nose. Quite rich on the palate with raisins, salt, toffee and treacle. A definite must try for any Whisky enthusiast. £72.99
Fettercairn ‘Fior’, Meaning ‘foot of the mountain’, Fettercairn is one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland (1824).Tasting notes: From a spicy toffee like nose to a dried fruit, hazelnut and chocolate like palate. A whisper of peat but a whisky with incredible length. £44.49
Glendronach 15 Year Old (Revival) a lovely Fully Oloroso Sherry Cask matured Whisky which offers Christmas by the glass full. Tasting notes: Deep and rich with stewed fruits, cinnamon, clove and allspice with an undercurrent of orange. Who needs mulled wine when you have this? £51.49
Redbreast 12 Year Old is a pot still Irish whiskey that is distilled In the Middleton distillery (same as Jameson). Tasting notes: Dried figs and nuts on the nose, which continue onto the palette with the addition of sherry soaked raisins and sugared almonds. Slightly heavier than we would expect from an Irish whiskey but with elegance from nose to finish. £53.99
