Sixteen Year Old Aberlour Double Cask Single Malt Scotch: this Speyside scotch whisky has been ‘double matured’ in traditional oak and sherry casks, which definitely adds to the rich notes. On the nose: you’ll get an immediate hit of soft dried fruits (raisins and apricots) and honey. Followed up by some caramel and spices. On the palate: those spices and sweet honey notes will be confirmed. Then you’ll start to taste fruit cake; it will almost taste like you are biting into a generous wedge of fruit cake covered with a layer of icing and marzipan! There is also a hint of aniseed. The finish: is very warming and does taste a little grainy, but the sweetness and spices really does complement it.
The verdict: This is such an excellent whisky and the use of the different casks really does make a difference. Just the kind of dram you’ll want to be sipping on during the festive season. As with all single malt scotches – this is best enjoyed straight, or with a very small amount of mineral water to allow the flavours to breathe.
